This charming fairy story was written by Christina for her godchildren. The animal and bird characters were based on those living in her former garden or along the river in front of the cottage. The real lemonade tree grew in her garden and comes from California, where the berries were used by the Indians to make a drink with lemons.

Making models of some of the hedgehogs using teazles and other herb seed heads, such as sea holly, has led to lovable and unique characters, cleverly portrayed by Audrey Elliott.
