Each with 3 sections ‘Getting to know the Tree’ covers a wide area of knowledge from cultivation experience to cookery, wines, crafts and folklore. ‘History of Medicinal Use’ recalls voices from the past quoting original herbals and recipes. About The Tree Dispensary

The Tree Dispensary presents an appreciation of trees as the author has experienced them through everyday life, as a herbalist, craftsperson, and herb historian. Most are native trees, some are fully naturalised and a few, such as the quince, simply thrive in the British climate. Some trees such as hawthorn, elder, lime flower, rosemary, juniper, and birch were chosen for their value to Christina when treating patients in her herbal Practice. Other trees, such as ash, beech, fig, holly, barberry, and hazel were chosen for their inclusion in historical recipes made on workshop days over many years.
Within four seasonal sections, the trees are presented and illustrated individually in 30 chapters. They are familiar to the general public, but often not appreciated for harvests in their medicinal role. Each of the trees discussed is examined in three parts:

The first ‘Getting to know the Tree’ covers a wide area of general knowledge from Christina’s cultivation experience where applicable to uses in cookery, wines, cosmetics, and crafts. Folklore is added as a final note.

Next in ‘History of Medicinal Use’ voices from the past speak for themselves from original herbals, rather than presenting a modern view of the past. The role they have played over the past two thousand years begins with plant archaeology and follows the tree in medicine through classical authors, herbals, and stillroom books.

Lastly in ‘The Herbalist’s Reference’ the medicinal harvests are revealed from the viewpoint of a modern herbalist. This includes usages, dosage and constituents and the author’s own wide experience of using these amazing tree remedies.
